Language Survey

Date 2/23/2007

Parents at Chiswick House School and St Martin’s College received a language survey in which they have been asked to give their views regarding which international languages they would like their children to study.

Chiswick House School and St Martin’s College are looking into the possibility of starting an international language at primary school level. In fact a pilot scheme with junior pupils is looking at the interests of young learners.

Italian Extra Curricular Classes are being organised by Chiswick House School. 30 Junior I – Junior V pupils are attending these classes.

Language Push in Primaries

Languages could soon be added to the primary curriculum, with informal assessment at the end of Key Stage 2.

Lord Dearing’s interim review of language teaching recommends that languages should become a standard part of the National Curriculum in its next review.

He is also calling for additional overseas visits and exchanges, more use of ICT to contact schools abroad, and lessons in other subjects to be taught through a language.

He said: ‘For languages: the earlier the better. We like the way they are being taught in primaries as they are introduced through cross-curricular work, and the way they draw on the young children’s sense of fun.’

The provisional proposals will be subject to extensive consultation with heads, teachers and other stakeholders before the final recommendations are published in February. Find the full report at www.teachernet.gov.uk/languagesreview
