In a 5-a-side football tournament organised by the MSSF at St. Edward's College in January, our Form 2 boys came up trumps by winning first prize.
In the group stages, wins against St. Aloysius College (2-1) and San Andrea School (5-0) allowed us to qualify in top spot, thus enabling us to move on to the Final Group Stages to decide 1st, 2nd and 3rd spots.
In the first game in the Final Group, the boys played some neat football to thump San Anton 5-1. In the second game, St. Edward's came out victorious by the odd goal in 7, beating San Anton 4-3, which meant that the St. Martin's-St. Edward's match was going to be decisive.
In this match against our fierce rivals St. Edward's, once again we produced some great football in the first half, but against the run of play, our opponents took the lead. Despite having numerous opportunities to level the score before half time, the ball just wouldn't go in. However we levelled matters from a free kick in the second half. Both teams fought extremely hard to win the game, although we knew that a draw was enough for us to win the tournament on goal difference. We had an extremely nervous final two minutes of added time until the referee blew the final whistle, when our boys excitedly ran around the pitch, ecstatic in their celebrations.
A big WELL DONE to all the players who took part; these were: Antonio Borg, Timmy Critien, Luke Bonnici, Michael Tonna, Liam Azzopardi, Julian Padovani, Luca Peric, Ian Falzon, Luke Hammett, Gilles Muscat, Nick Imm, Michael Pace.
Yet another success for our school teams at MSSF Tournaments!
