‘School Librarian of the Year’ - SMC Ms Romaine

Date 10/30/2009

Ms Romaine Petrocochino was recently awarded the ‘School Librarian of the Year' prize by the Schools Library Service within the Directorate for Educational Services of the Department of Education. St Martin's College Library also placed second in the ‘School Library of the Year' award.

During the presentation ceremony Mr George Borg, Director Student Services Department, praised the important work that school librarians are carrying out within the educational sector in Malta.  He made special reference to the importance of cultivating information and literacy skills in students for the development of lifelong learning.

The library at St Martin's College is well aware of this fact and acts as a learning resource centre where students are taught to use both book and online sources of information.  Orientation visits are held for all new students and information literacy skills sessions are held on a regular basis.  There is a hub of activity throughout the day as students browse for books, read, or attend lessons in an informal classroom environment.  Activities are held throughout the year, including visits by well known Maltese and foreign authors. Book circulation statistics are extremely positive and the library also opens during the summer holidays to maintain the students' enthusiasm for reading.
